Dinner and a Show

Yesterday, I went to see my favorite musical called Into the Woods. I have been watching it on video and DVD since I was a toddler, but I have never seen it live. The play is a combination of several stories: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. Throw in a childless baker and his wife, a witch, and a not so objective narrator and you have one of Stephen Sondheim's greatest works. (Actually, it's the only one I've ever seen of Sondheim's.) Every single song is magnificent, and they're funny too. The actors were really good, and I wish I could see it again.
Prior to the show, Papa took my mom and me to a Greek cafe. Check out my meal. It was awesome.

Summer Reading

This month I've read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The book was told in little vignettes, and it was really good. Other books that I've read or am in the middle of reading are: Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth, George Orwell's 1984, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. All good reads for a tween on summer break.

Sooooo Odd

My sister has an affection for peanuts, but not for eating them. She keeps them as pets and names them. Here in this picture is a rare four-nut peanut. Their names as given by my sister are (from left to right): Nutty, Nutsatoo, Nutto, and Nutsacracker. Her first peanut pet was named Goober. He was a one-nut peanut, and as her bedtime stories went, had two-nut peanut parents. He actually slept each night in one half of an empty walnut shell on my sister's dresser. In these stories, he went to school and wanted to be a two-nut peanut or a three-nut peanut instead. Fortunately, Goober went to a boarding school made especially for one-nut peanuts. He did not last long. Shortly after Momma created these stories, he was accidently smashed by the lethal palm of my brother. My sister was sooooo sad, she called the "peanut ambulance," who fixed him up by putting a band-aid all around him. He lived for another three months and then poor Goober just disappeared forever. I told you it was odd.

Happy Father's Day

This is Papa. I love that he takes just me to hockey games and buys me nachos and popcorn. I love that he tucks me in every single night. I also love how he laughs easily. He takes me on walks to the basketball court. He taught me how to shoot and pass a basketball there. What I don't love about him is that he always trips me on purpose if he's on the floor and I'm walking by him. He also body checks me in the freezer section at the grocery store. But I still love him. Happy Father's Day, Papa!

Oh, Canada . . .

My Uncle Adam sent my family and me eight cans of Canadian Maple Syrup and a can opener. We got it on our doorstep today. Check out the cans--they are in French and English. My Uncle Adam, who lives in Canada, enjoys food. He has introduced me to all kinds, like Indian curry, soft shell crab, and teppanyaki. One of his favorite drinks is a Dr. Pepper Icee from Target, and I remember going to get one every night one week just so he could get his fix. He also makes the best mac and cheese (or Kraft Dinner if you're Canadian) that I have ever had. And whenever we go out to eat Korean BBQ, he eats the most, and then he goes to In-N-Out to get a hamburger and a shake for dessert. Surprisingly, he isn't heavy at all. I wonder what his secret is!

All Aboard!

My baby cousin, Max, is obsessed with trains. He has dinnerware and clothing with trains on them, a train table with countless wooden trains, train books and videos, and he has a train bed. It is trains, trains, trains, all the live long day. It's really lucky that he is going to move to this town. There is a train park and a commuter train with railroad tracks very close to the house he's going to live in. He's going to love it.

This Town

This town is so cool, they have a street named after me. And they even spelled it right! My aunt is moving here, and I can't wait to visit her in her new home. There was a large farmer's market on a downtown street and lots of fine restaurants. The shops were very different from the ones that I'm used to. They seemed old-fashioned and charming. No neon in sight. What was my favorite part? Eating 21 Flavors' frozen yogurt, sampling fresh oranges, and of course, seeing "McKenna St."

Whew!

I just finished making homemade gnocchi. It wore me out, and I'm sore all over. Just from standing for a few hours. But it was sooooo good. My sister made a three cheese sauce that was delicious. The gnocchi was good with tomato sauce, too. I'd make you some, but I'm just too tired. We're going to play a little Guitar Hero, and then it's time to hit the hay. Good Night!

I'm a Lifehouse Fan

Seeing a band live is sooooo much better than hearing them on the radio because you can actually see them playing the instruments. The guys in Lifehouse are such good musicians. I'm loving their song "You and Me." They also sang "Hanging by a Moment," "First Time," and I think they sang "Quasimodo." They were spectacular last night. To see their video of "Whatever It Takes," click here.

Saturday Shopping

Today, I went over to Sur La Table and Anthropolgie. We were in need of a potato ricer and a gnocchi press for well, gnocchi. I love gnocchi, and I want to try to make it myself. While we were there, we tried to pick up a few Zak! Happy Spoons (large spoons with faces in them), but they were all gone. So sad. But we did find an awesome two layer cake pan in the shape of a giant cupcake and much needed baking sheets.
At Anthropolgie, we saw two adorable stuffed animal cows, but they were pricey. I loved all the shades of green (which is my favorite color) and the dish towels. My favorite one was bright blue with birds on it. Check out the bins with the drawer pulls! Awesome. I got some really good ideas for decorating my room, too. Hope you have a good Saturday!

Dessert Before Dinner

It's not wrong. Dessert at 4:00 p.m. Dinner at 6:00 p.m. I didn't bake the shortcake. I didn't pick the raspberries. But I did whip up the whipped cream on top. I made it out of heavy whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla. It was delicious.

A summer greeting to my friends who just finished the school year from my old school, two of which are fellow bloggers. I hope you have a great summer!

Curled Up With a Good Book

This  week, I'm reading The Life of Pi by Yann Martel.  It is a fictional story about a sixteen- year-old named Piscine Molitor Patel, more commonly known as Pi Patel.  When Pi's father sells his zoo, he takes the animals aboard a Japanese ship to sell in Canada.  However, the ship sinks and only Pi, a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra, and a tiger make it on a life boat.  Soon, only Pi and the tiger are alive. In the part that I'm reading, Pi is going mad, thinking that the tiger is talking to him.  I haven't finished it yet--I'll let you know what I think of the book when I'm done.

Summer Blues

I'm sick.  I have a nasty summer cold.  It didn't stop me from making dinner which was Mexican Casserole.  I might have coughed or sneezed on it once or twice, but my family ate it just the same. Just kidding.  I had a full day of reading Harry Potter for the umpteenth time, practicing my flute and cello, and doing a bunch of logic puzzles.   Right now I wish my sister wasn't so annoying because she keeps calling me on our walkie-talkies.  It's all I ask.

A "Get Well" blog greeting to Forrest who after trying to pop his neck like he does his knuckles, ended up in the ER.  I don't think his neck is this straight anymore.
I hope you feel better.

I'm Back

      My trip was awesome.
